December 29, 1947 - August 16, 2023
Born Beverly Marva James, to Benjamin A. and Jessie L. James on December 29, 1947,
in St. Augustine, FL, she became Beverly J. Crooms when she married her best friend
and soulmate, Reginald Crooms, on December 27, 1991. She entered eternal rest on
August 16, 2023.
Beverly received her formal education from Richard Murray High School (class of 1965)
in St. Augustine, Florida. She went on to earn a degree in Economics from Florida A&M
University in 1969. She was truly a proud FAMU Rattler.
Beverly’s professional life included working with Job Corp, Citibank and T-Mobile. She
was a mentor, trainer, supervisor and friend to everyone with whom she worked. She
left an imprint of herself within each of the positions she held.
There is no secret as to how big Beverly’s heart was. Her devotion to family and friends
was clear in her everyday life. She was intentional about calling her sister,
grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and her friends. She enjoyed traveling, spending
time with family, reaching out to colleagues, donating to those in need, sending cards or
flowers on special occasions and essentially being a light in the lives of everyone with
whom she came in contact.
Beverly was preceded in death by her parents, Benjamin A. and Jessie L James, her
sister, Barbara Hammond and her brother, Benjamin (Buddy) James Jr. She leaves to
cherish her memory: husband and soulmate, Reginald Crooms of Tampa, FL; devoted
children, William Roberts, Jr. (Marbella) of Memphis, TN, Monica Crooms of Orlando,
FL, and Ryan Crooms (Cara) of Dallas, TX; her sister, Hortense Tookes of Tallahassee,
FL; grandchildren, William Roberts III (Grace) of Brooksville, FL, Christen Roberts of
Brooklyn, NY, Aaron Mcintosh of Tampa, FL, and Ashleigh Johnson of Tallahassee, FL;
great-grandchildren, A’nevaeh Roberts, Angelo Roberts, Aayden Mcintosh, and Arielle
Mcintosh; nephews, Karl B Hammond of Cincinnati, OH; Bruce L Hammond of
Augusta, GA; Arthur L Hammond of Waukegan, IL; Douglas W Hammond (Patty) of
Grovetown, GA; Gerald Tookes (Alicia) of Tallahassee, FL; and nieces, Carla Jo
Hammond-Smith and Karen A Burney, both of Lithonia, GA, Beverly Ann Wright of
Ocala, FL; Allison Oston of St Augustine, FL and a host of great-nieces and
great-nephews, in addition to numerous friends.
