On Saturday, February 24, 2024, Gloria Anita Henry transitioned from this life to her eternal rest, in Orlando, Florida, at the age of 84. She was born on June 28, 1939, in Orlando, Florida. She was the daughter of the late Odell Sr. and Evelyn Johnson.
Gloria was an amazing woman who was loved by everyone. Her infectious smile could brighten any room. She was known for her sense of humor, strong will, and love for shopping at Costco. Gloria cherished spending time with her family and close friends, finding her greatest joy with her daughter Tara and her husband Leroy.
Gloria leaves to forever cherish, her husband Leroy Henry of 62 years, daughter Tara Lanita Henry, sister Juanita Humphries, brother Odell Johnson Jr. (Helen), goddaughter Sarita Lynn Johnson, the Henson, Humphries, Johnson, Meuse and Mitchell families and a host of loving nieces, nephews, and cousins too numerous to name.
Gloria attended Jones High School, graduating in the Class of 1957, and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree from Saint Augustine’s University in 1961 in Raleigh, NC., and a master's degree from Rollins College in Winter Park, FL., in 1974.
She dedicated 41 years of her life to Orange County Public Schools as an Elementary School teacher, starting at Holden Street Elementary School 1961-62, Eccleston Elementary School 1962-1972, and Cheney Elementary School from 1972 until her retirement in 2002.
Gloria was a devoted and loyal member of The Episcopal Church of St. John the Baptist where she served as the Chairperson of the United Thanks Offering, Episcopal Church Women, Vacation Bible School teacher, and on the Hospitality Committee.
Gloria was an esteemed member of her beloved Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated for 65 years being recognized as a Golden Soror. On November 20,1958, she was initiated in the Gamma Xi Chapter which is located on the campus of Saint Augustine’s University Raleigh, NC. She was loved by her Sorors and served the community faithfully as an active member of the Orlando Chapter - Delta Omicron Omega 1962- 2024.
Rest in peace, dear Gloria, we will cherish your legacy of love and laughter forever.
